THE NEW HORDE

All 13 Hoard Winner coins have now been found! Each lucky winner got a £100 voucher for a local outdoor equipment shop.

In remote, secret places in The Southern Uplands of Scotland, sculptured kists can be found. These are the legacy of Waymerks, named after the hand-minted coins with which they were filled. Now the kists contain a new treasure.

ROUTE NEWS

Accommodation Discrepency
It has come to the rangers' attention - one of the guidebooks states that no accommodation is available in Beattock. This is not correct. You can walk the extra distance into Moffat if you choose but Beattock and its immediate surroundings offer a good choice of B&B and camping accommodation.

More Timber Harvesting  -  this time to the east of Glentrool - the forest road towards Loch Dee will be closed for a period of 8 weeks, the path diverted over Trostan Hill (which used to be an alternative route for the SUW).

GLENTROOL

Please Note: I am advised by Forestry Commission Scotland that the path along the south side of Loch Trool  (SU Way and also FCS Green Trail) will be closed for remedial works from Monday 10th Sept to Wednesday 12th. TW
Further to the above, the remedial works turn out to be more extensive than thought - south side of Loch Trool now closed until 28/9/12

Timber Harvesting at Potburn, Ettrickhead No diversion necessary but please take heed of advisory notices.

Tweedbank - The line of the disused railway through Tweedbank near Galashiels will at times  be subject to temporary diversions-please follow signs.

Caldons Campsite Is Permanently Closed. Forestry Commission Scotland will not be re-opening Caldons Campsite. There will therefore be no shop and facilities at Caldons (though wild camping will be allowed). The nearest shop and campsite is now at Glentrool Holiday Park at Bargrennan, tel 01671 840280.

The Tweed Rivers Interpretation Project has also provided interpretation at Dryhope Tower, adjacent to the SUW.

The tower has recently been stabilised and repaired through a major programme of work and you can now climb to the top of this former reiver's stronghold. You do not need a key for the door - just pull hard. IT IS WELL WORTH A VISIT!
