There are stations at Stranraer, 5 miles from Portpatrick at the start of the route and Dunbar, 6 miles from Cockburnspath at the end of the route.
There are 2 stations on the route itself, one is at Sanquhar and the other at Tweedbank. These can be used either to split the route or as a starting point for many short walks.
